Armen Khojoyan

Armenian symbols enriched with Greek and Hindu mythology in paintings that vibrate with music — collages that become richly layered jewel and fabric sculptures

Armen Khojoyan- Artist

The paintings of Armen Khojoyan, blazing with brilliant color, draw on Armenia’s tradition of illuminated manuscripts and symbols, and on themes from Hindu and Greek mythology. The luscious textures of the paintings vibrate with music. Turning to other media, Khojoyan creates collages by recycling fabrics and jewelry from the flea markets of Yerevan, bringing them together in richly layered compositions.

Armen Khojoyan, a truly cosmopolitan artist, was born in Yerevan, the capital and artistic centre of Armenia, in 1959. He graduated from the Yerevan Theatrical and Art Institute with a master's degree in painting. He is a member of the Artists Union of Armenia and, since 1985, has participated in all-union art exhibitions in the Soviet Union, as well as in exhibitions abroad. He has been a member of UNESCO since 2000.

Khojoyan's paintings have been shown in solo exhibitions at Theatre Victor Hugo, Paris, the Russian Art Gallery, Los Angeles, and the Urban and Architectural Centre, Yerevan. A number of his works are preserved in the National Fund of the Ministry of Culture of Armenia.

He has participated in group exhibitions in France, Switzerland, Russia, Kuwait, Syria, Lithuania and Armenia, including the Artists Union 2000 exhibition dedicated to Dante, and the 1700th Anniversary of Christianity in Armenia, in 2001.

Known to his friends as Khojo, the artist is an extraordinarily sociable and generous man. His studio functions as a meeting point and library for many artists in Yerevan. While an avid supporter of contemporary Armenian art, Khojo is also a guide to art and music from distant regions and epochs (as well as a great host and cook).
